Laura Tamblyn Watts is an Assistant Professor (status only) at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto and a Fellow of the Institute for Lifecourse and Aging. A lawyer, called to the BC Bar in 1999, she is the founder and CEO of CanAge: Canada’s National Seniors’ Advocacy Organization. Previously served as National Director of the Canadian Centre for Elder Law and Chief Public Policy Officer at CARP. An expert in law and aging issues, Laura is the lead investigator in numerous major research and policy initiatives, and a researcher on key grants in both Canada and internationally. Her work has special focus on mental capacity and decision- making, financial regulation, elder mistreatment, long-term care, home and community care, ageism, seniors’ health policy and the rights of older people. She is the author of several recent major reports on measurement of Canada’s National Dementia Strategy, and also on Adult Vaccination in Canada. Laura serves on a wide number of Boards and Expert Advisory groups in the field of aging and is a regular media commentator on aging issues. She was awarded the Law Foundation of Ontario’s Community Leadership in Justice Fellowship, and is an International Fellow of Stetson University’s Center of Excellence in Elder Law.
